The island\u2019s economy has historically relied on several key activities, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fishing<\/strong>, which was once a primary livelihood but has since been banned by the government.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Crop cultivation<\/strong>, particularly cassava and sweet potatoes, which were significantly impacted when palm oil plantations took over much of the available land.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Charcoal production<\/strong>, which was also prohibited due to concerns about deforestation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, many residents of the island have lost their primary sources of income and, consequently, struggle to afford school tuition and other essential educational costs for their children. The island also faces a high prevalence of HIV\/AIDS, which further exacerbates the community\u2019s challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an urgent need for behavioral change, particularly among the youth, as the difficult living conditions on the island contribute to social issues like early marriages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In light of these challenges, the school is seeking support from potential donors to help improve the lives and education of the children in this community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Buvuma Island is located on Lake Victoria and is surrounded by 51 smaller islands.
